This quote resonates with me in many ways. As a consumer, we do have a choice from the food we consume to the clothes we buy and the way we live. Making a shift to natural living and wellness has happened gradually for me. I began to educate myself more on natural resources that can have a positive impact on our own wellness; not to mention that of many others involved in the process, as well as our natural environment.
There’s a misconception that anything well branded and widely available in convenience stories is trustworthy, do you agree? Well, it is not necessarily so. Seek information. Get educated on what is good for you and your family, and what is not. Ask yourself, how does it add value to my life? Does it care for the environment as much as I do? Does it contain any toxic chemicals?
Natural Living | Why?
Everything that surrounds us impacts the quality of our lives. Our air quality can greatly affect our moods and health. The products we use in the home can often be toxic from repeated exposure. Repeatedly applying non-organic substances on our skin can have serious long-term side effects. And inhaling chemical compounds from our clothes may cause unwanted respiratory problems. The best thing about all of this – it’s all in our hands; we can control these things now.
My journey started with education; nature offers us everything we need! I first made a step toward seeking organic products for personal care. Now I am taking this interest a step further and began studying a little bit more on herbs and essential oils through these resources, the Herbs & Essential Oils Bundle (HEOB) curated by Ultimate Bundles. Here’s why:
Home – Better Air Quality
For many of us living in cities, we know that the struggle for clean air quality is real.
Using chemical products in the home also increases the toxicity levels, which can be very harmful to sensitive people (people with breathing conditions, babies and children, elderly and pets).
Use Essential Oil blends in a diffuser or burner:
Begin by taking some time to learn about the numerous essential oils and their uses. I suggest you start with a few – really, there are so many it can get overwhelming! My favourite is a blend of Rosemary, Lemon and Lemongrass for a clean and fresh energy in the house. I got this recipe from My Essential Oil Journal in the HEOB by Tonia Lyons.
What about the products you use to clean your surface areas and bathroom? Do they have any potentially ‘toxic’ ingredients? Unknowingly we inhale every bit of it.
Make your own all-purpose cleaner spray with essential oils. Experiment with different scents and get to know which essentials oils are more appropriate for cleaning with anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties. I like to use variations using peppermint oil, lemon oil and basil oil; they all have antiseptic and anti-bacterial properties. The Essential Oil Profiles gives an explanation on all the herbs and oils and their uses.
Body Care – Self-love
Once you’ve nailed a few essential oils, learn about their carrier oils which will open a new dimension to your cosmetic and toiletry cabinet!
Have you made your own body wash? It’s time! I recently made my own body wash for the first time just a couple of months ago; a recipe that was shared with me by a friend – you can get access to these FREE DIY Cosmetic Recipes here. Believe me, your skin will thank you for it!
In the Ultimate Bundle, there are loads more varieties including bath, body, scrubs, lip balms, salves and more. I particularly like the recipes and information given in the Natural Body Care pack by Sarah Kirkconnel. The author also gives tips on which oils can be substituted for another which is absolutely fantastic as most of the time we don’t have the exact oils in our inventory as recommended in the recipes we want to make.
I’m experimenting with a variety of ingredients for my personal care products, even with coffee! I particularly use tea tree oil (great against blemishes) and rosemary for its astringent and antimicrobial properties in facial products. I like to add up vitamin E oil too which is a natural anti-radical counteracting the repeated exposure my skin has to pollution. If you haven’t got access to the simple and quick DIY cosmetic recipes you should do so now!
Your Laundry – respiratory wellness
Spoiler alert! You are unknowingly and repeatedly inhaling toxic chemicals through your clothes as you hang them up to dry and wear them for prolonged hours. A lot of people I know also hang clothes indoors – are you one of them? Sometimes on rainy days, it’s inevitable. I get it. This gives us even more reasons to switch to natural alternatives.
Make your own detergents or buy from the organic section in your supermarket.
In the Herbs & Essential Oils Bundle, Tracy Robinson with her Natural Living Green Cleaning provides over 50 detergent recipes for the home. I started to use her laundry detergent recipe and I love the smell that my clothes emit. It’s actually quite simple to make and once you get the hang of it, it will become just as routine as it is to go to the store to buy the regular laundry soap.
Food – you are what you eat
There is nothing better than sprucing up your dishes with natural herbs that you can most often grow in your backyard or balcony (maybe even your window sill!).
The continuous ingestion of certain ingredients, preservatives and chemical compounds found in pre-packaged food and flavour enhancers could never be good for our health. I’m a big believer in ‘you are what you eat!’ and whilst I still have some weird cravings that are far from healthy, I try my best to flavour my food naturally. Not only do herbs give a kick to the flavour but you can also heal through your food.
Start by understanding the herbs that are available to you. If you live close by a forest find out what grows naturally. There is a guide on foraging ‘Backyard Herbs’
– it explains how to identify herbs, take samples (sustainably) and grow them at home. Check out the nearest local farmer’s markets and ask them about what is grown locally.
The Guide to Herbs & Spices explains most of the popular and commonly found herbs and spices and gives amazing recipes on blends and homemade mixes to prepare and add up to your flavoursome dishes!
I’ve been so excited about sharing this post with you because honestly, I’ve learnt so much! And to be frank I haven’t started digesting even a fraction of the content and already it has been so useful and motivational to try out new things. I keep finding myself opening up the folder, like a sort of encyclopedia whenever I need a detergent to clean, or when I want to apply cream to my dry skin!
The Herbs & Essential Oils bundle is packed with amazing resources and ask you can see I’m pretty darn excited about it! Don’t get overwhelmed (I know you will!). You can download everything to your device and take your time to consume the information. I really suggest starting with Essential Oil Tool Kit & Recipe Journal: it has many useful printables and easy-to-follow guides to get you started.
