Can you close your eyes and imagine the refreshing summery scent of peppermint leaves and essential oil?
I can no longer say “this is one of my favourite essential oils” as each essential oil has so many benefits and gorgeous scents that it’s too difficult to choose. However, peppermint essential oil is one of the more popular ones that I use in cleaning products, diffused to support my respiratory system and also in cosmetics.Follow
The peppermint plant was first recorded in 1000BC when dried peppermint leaves were found in ancient Egyptian pyramids. Peppermint has been used throughout history and has been valued as a multi-purpose plant and essential oil whose components are now used by cosmetic, culinary and health industries around the globe.
With so many facets and uses, it is no surprise that Peppermint oil continues to be one of doTERRA’s best-selling and highly favoured essential oils.
Peppermint’s scientific name is Mentha piperita. In ancient Greek Mythology, Minthe (also known as Mentha), a nymph, was transformed by Queen Persephone into a sweet-smelling mint.

Peppermint oil to support digestion
The main chemical component in Peppermint oil is menthol which is also known to soothe the smooth muscle that lines the colon.* This relaxant property occurs due to menthol’s ability to keep calcium channels working optimally. The relaxing of colon smooth muscle reduces the movement of bowels, which eases occasional bowel looseness. Because of this effect, menthol is the main contributor to Peppermint essential oil’s ability to promote digestive health.* Most essential oils are not recommended to take internally. I only use essentials oils that I trust to take internally. Check out doTERRA.
