natural cleaning kitchen DIY recipes

It’s high time to ditch conventional cleaning products that are loaded with harmful chemicals and take a step forward towards DIY Natural Cleaning.

Cleaning the kitchen (and bathroom – but we will leave that for another post) are perhaps the most important places of the home to clean regularly. With food handling and gems entering the kitchen, my kitchen surfaces are basically the only place I would clean daily.

When using conventional household cleaners that contain chemicals, these are being left on the surface and can ultimately contaminate our food. So whilst cleaning, you are inhaling the toxins and later ingesting them with your homemade food. Removing bacteria and the expense of eating chemicals? That doesn’t sound right.

This is the reason the first cleaning product I made was a multi-purpose spray for surfaces (recipe below). Using simple and natural ingredients that effectively cleans and removes bacteria whilst also safe for my health. That sounds better to me!

DIY Natural Dishwashing Liquid

1 cup soap nut concentrate
A dash of white vinegar
5 drops of peppermint essential oil or a blend of lemon and orange essential oil.
2 drops Vitamin E oil.

Tip: For pots and pans, I add some Organic SLS Free Liquid Castile Soap to the mixture to help take away excess oils.

Kitchen Floor Tiles DIY Natural Cleaning Solution

When I introduced this cleaning solution to my helper and she remarked, “this smells soooo goooddd!” I knew something was right! I explained to her that this wasn’t only a more natural smell in comparison with conventional synthetic scents, but also healthier for her to use.

1 part soap nut concentrate
3 – 4 parts water
10 drops Lemon Essential Oil
10 drops Melaleuca (Tee Trea) Essential Oil
Dash of White Vinegar or Apple Cider Vinegar

Tip: Prepare the soap nut concentrate ahead of time in large batches and store in the fridge in recycled glass jars. I also add the essential oils and label the bottles accordingly. When needed, add the vinegar and water.

If you want to take your sustainability efforts one step further, consider going plastic-free in the kitchen.

Use Natural Dish Sponges instead of microplastic ones. Microplastics are making their ways into our water systems and eventually harming marine life. Wipe down your surfaces with Natural Micro Fibre Clothes and dry your dishes with Linen Stonewashed Tea Towels. These just a few of some swaps you can make.
