In my quest to seek more sustainable and ethical brands, I recently came across CANO – an ethical shoe brand committed to setting new standards of transparency, fairness, and sustainability in the fashion industry.

Isn’t it time you began to ask ‘who made my clothes?’ Or ‘who made my shoes?’ What about your accessories and every other little purchase you make?

I want to live in a world where people are fairly treated, traditions and artisan skills are continued and respected, and above all that our environment is preserved along the way. Do you also care about these values? I believe that CANO has ticked all the boxes for me and I can’t wait to get my feet into their latest designs.

3 top reasons why I think this sustainable & ethical brand is awesome!

1. Innovative in their transparency

CANO shoes will be launching NFC chips into every shoe! Each individual who buys a pair of CANOs will be able to scan the implanted chip with their smartphone. The chip will give us, (the shoe owners) information on every step of the manufacturing process, introducing complete supply chain transparency. By scanning their shoe’s chip, we will be able to find out which artisans worked on the shoe. We will see a full profile including the artisan’s name, photo, and how CANO supports the artisan. Check out their video as they explain Who made my clothes 2.0

2. Recognizes artisans’ talent and time

This new technology empowers both CANO and its customers to give CANO’s artisans the credit they deserve for crafting beautiful footwear. These artisans blend traditional craftsmanship with modern design to create durable, comfortable, and fashionable shoes. Because CANO values their efforts, they pay fair wages, use fair manufacturing practices, and give 5 percent of the sale of each shoe to projects that improve the local living and working conditions of these artisans and their families.

3. Sustainable Materials are sourced in Mexico

Handcrafted in Mexico CANO’s shoe line includes traditional huaraches, dress shoes, and boots. All products are made out of vegetable-tanned leather and are handcrafted in Mexico. “To ensure the greatest impact on the local community and the lowest impact on the environment, we want to make sure that the whole manufacturing process takes place in Mexico. This includes all steps in the value chain, from sourcing the raw materials, to processing them, to the final creation of each shoe.” Lukas Puender, co-founder.

The cowhide leather is vegetable tanned following a traditional 200-year-old method that involves an extensive 14-step process that takes up to 28 days. The cowhides are dyed using plant and earth-based tanning agents instead of harmful chemicals and are naturally dried outside over multiple days. The cows come from wide-open farms. All leather is sourced locally, keeping transportation and emissions within the manufacturing process low.

Heard enough? “Get me a pair now!”

More reasons why I love this brand?

High school friends, Philipp Mayer and Lukas Puender, founded CANO in 2016 and they are committed to giving people, like you and me, access to sustainable and ethically handmade shoes. I love that there are more people like them that can put artisans on the international fashion landscape. This gives the artisans the credit they deserve by introducing their high-quality, handcrafted shoes as a stylish, ethical, and sustainable alternative to fast fashion. It’s a win-win-win. We want more!

I just backed their campaign and just cannot wait to receive my pair! sustainable-ethical-shoesThis sale will support them in launching the NFC chip technology into every pair of CANOs.

It’s time to vote more consciously with our purchasing power and create the world we want to live in.

Wondering what is an NFC chip? (I had to look this one up too!)

ethical-sustainable-show-appNFC means near field communication. Whilst the technical part of it still baffles me, I like to think of it as a modern-day barcode. You simply scan with your phone

and are directed to the information provided in the code. What happens is that in the production process, data from the artisans and the materials is written on the chip and then later with the help of their app, this data is visualised for us, the hungry consumer! The chips are not traceable or reading any data from the phone. Watch their video explanation here.
