What does eco-travel mean? There are so many aspects one should consider which I would leave for another post; and some are harder to control. In the meantime, what you can control is your use of products and the type of products you are consuming.

In my recent trip to Borneo, I wanted to make sure that I do not produce or leave behind any waste and that my personal care products respect the environment. This means making sure I use only eco personal care products that have the least chemical usage possible.

WHY? The products that we use are not only absorbed by our skin and inhaled into our lungs – they are also cause to contaminating waters that we so much depend on. Chemicals from personal care products enter the rivers and oceans and have a harmful impact on marine life.

Whilst these products are recommended as ideal travel personal care products, I do use most of them at home too. And we, as conscious consumers, should also be mindful when buying products for home use too.

My personal goal is to lower my footprint at every stage when possible. Others argue that the act of travelling itself is increasing ones carbon footprint – that is true. Perhaps selfishly, I would not deny myself from a holiday or to visit and experience another part of this amazing planet we live in. We need to do it as responsibly as possible.

So, what’s in my eco-travel toiletry bag?

Disclaimer: I may be an affiliate for products that I recommend. See below full disclosure.

Re-useable cleansing pads – if you wear make-up, these are perfect to remove make-up. But I also use them to cleanse my face from any pollutants or dirt accumulated during the day! You can find them on Etsy here – there are a range of hemp-cotton, organic cotton and other materials available.

Natural, Chemical-free sunscreen – the contamination of sunscreen lotions in the oceans has contributed to the damage of coral. National Geographic reports, “14,000 tons of sunscreen are thought to wash into the oceans each year; 82,000 chemicals from personal-care products may be tainting the seas; about 80 percent of corals in the Caribbean have been lost in the last 50 years due to pollution, coastal development, and warming waters.” I am currently using Biotique Bio Vera which claims to be organic and does not test on animals. You can find more natural sunscreens on Etsy like this Butter Me Up Sunscreen or Earth Hour.

Paper soap – This innovation is perfect for hiking trips when you want to quickly wash your hands. I used Citronella Paper Soap from Wild Earth (this is currently only available in Nepal). Here is another biodegradable paper soap on Etsy

Natural soap & shampoo bar – Using a soap bar instead of liquid soaps and shampoos reduce the bottle waste that often time will not be disposed of correctly ending up in landfills. Furthermore, seek a soap bar that only uses natural plant-based ingredients.

Natural mosquito repellent – Summer holidays and mosquito bites go hand in hand for me! I am a mosquito attractor so it’s very important for me to have proper protection that is gentle on the skin, repels bugs and does not contain chemicals and is DEET-free. I opted for Wild Earth’s Citronella Body Balm & doTERRA TerraShield

Dry Shampoo – If you’re hiking for days and don’t have access to a good shower, try a dry shampoo and leaves the scalp refreshed.

Foot powder – This was more for the hubby! If you’re on long sweaty walks, natural foot powder works wonders to keep your feet dry and refreshed… reducing the not so pleasant odour from sweaty feet and shoes!

Re-useable face towel – this came in handy on very hot days. I would dampen the cloth and spray with diluted Melaleuca (tea tree oil) for refreshing and purified sensations. You can find a selection of organic face towels on Etsy.

Natural toothpaste – opt for a brand that is effective yet gentle on the environment. Earth Hero has a selection of organic and ethical selection of toothpaste… Or make your own!

Air (or Breath) Touch – I carry this around with me everywhere! It is a calming aroma that also helps to clear the airways. I find this especially useful during plane rides and passing through airports and air-conditioned places that often tend to cause blockages in my nose and throat.

Melaleuca Touch– handy application for skin irritations.

Digestzen – an essential oil blend that you can take before or after meals to reduce any stomach upsets (gas, bloating..) and also rub onto the belly area to reduce any motion sickness and discomfort when travelling.
